What to Expect

For many people, seeing a therapist for the first time may seem quite daunting.  At Thoughtful Health we will do our best to make you feel at ease.  Our suburban location is easily accessible and close to amenities, without the parking problems involved in traveling to a hospital or inner-city clinic.  If you have concerns or queries prior to your first appointment please contact our receptionists who will be happy to assist.

The First Appointment

The first appointment will usually take around 50 minutes, and during this time your therapist will ask about the problems identified in your referral letter, as well as other questions related to your past history.  If you have relevant medical investigations or reports you should bring these along.

It is not always possible to provide a diagnosis or management plan after just one session.  A full assessment usually takes two to three sessions, following which a summary letter will usually be written to the referring doctor.

Confidentiality

It is important that conversations between therapist and patient remain confidential, and this includes the treatment of children and adolescents.  There are some circumstances, however, where confidentiality does not apply, for instance when there are concerns about safety or risk.  If you have any questions about confidentiality please discuss these at your appointment.

Choosing the right therapist

Not every therapist is right for every patient.  It can be helpful to ask your friends or relatives for recommendations, but the best source of advice is usually your GP.  Talk to your GP about which psychiatrist, psychologist or occupational therapist might be right for you.  Think about whether you would like to see someone older, younger, or of a particular gender.  It is important to keep an open mind, and remember that sometimes you have to try a few different therapists to find the right one for you.

All of the professionals at Thoughtful Health will endeavor to work with you collaboratively to develop a management plan which is right for your needs.  Sometimes a difference of opinion may arise.  If this is the case, you are encouraged to talk with your doctor who can help to identify and manage the problem, or if need be suggest an alternative practitioner.
